This is my ode to the character Callie Torres from the TV series Grey’s Anatomy. Oh, how I love her. When it comes to positive public narrative representation of bisexuality, the options are limited. When narrowing that pool down to realistic, well-loved, complicated bisexual characters, the options are minimal. Callie Torres, played by Sara Ramirez, is a brilliant bisexual Latina orthopedic surgeon, has several relationships with folks of different genders, endures anti-bi micro-aggressions, and manages to find the energy to educate the folks around her on what it means to be a bisexual woman. She discovered her bisexuality in her adult life, a narrative that is so infrequently found in the public sphere. This representation is vital, especially for bisexual women, as this lack of narrative about bisexuality as a legitimate sexual identity is a large part of what leads so many bisexual people to realize their sexuality later in life and endure internalized cissexism and violence along the way. If I had seen this kind of representation earlier in life, I wonder how it would have changed my experience of discovering my bi-ness. Having those narratives present is a huge step towards acknowledging the reality of one’s own existence. I made this piece, as well as much of my other work, to further positive public representation of bisexuality. The Education Industrial Complex tends to undervalue art, especially “Low Art,” which in no subtle way limits access to education and access to understanding of self. I made this piece to honor the importance of pop culture in an educational process. A Digital Ode to Callie Torres
