I explore the idea of myself as ancestor existing at the same time as my ancestor, Nüwa (女媧). In Chinese mythology, Nüwa and her brother Fuxi (伏羲) were the deities who co-created humans. I chose her because I grew up watching a TV series called The Sword and the Fairy (仙劍奇俠傳). Its main character, Zhao Ling'er, was a descendant of Nüwa. When Ling’er got pregnant, she found herself with a snake tail. She thought she was an evil snake demon. But it was actually because she was a descendant of Nüwa. This TV series was the first work that made me ponder what it meant to be human and I pondered why snakes were considered evil, and if things needed to fit under just good or evil. I claim her as my mythological ancestor since she made me. That is why I depict her cradling baby Jai. It makes me warm to think I was someone who she thought of creating, and who has yet to arrive at the stage I am at in my adulthood.
